Female scalp micropigmentation before and after treatment at Erika's Beauty in Derby, showing improved appearance of hair density.

When people hear about scalp micropigmentation, they often picture a man with a shaved head wanting to recreate the appearance of a natural hairline. And while that's certainly one of the reasons people choose SMP, it's only a small part of what this treatment can achieve.

At Erika's Beauty in Derby, we want more women to know that scalp micropigmentation can be just as beneficial for female hair thinning and hair loss. You don't need to be completely bald, shave your head or have severe hair loss to consider the treatment.

Sometimes, it's simply about making the scalp less noticeable through your existing hair. And for someone who has spent years feeling self-conscious about thinning hair, that can make a tremendous difference.

Hair Loss Doesn't Only Affect Men

We often associate hair loss with men, but thinning hair is also a very common concern among women.

It may begin with a slightly wider parting, less volume around the crown or more scalp becoming visible when the hair is tied back.

For some women, hair thinning develops gradually with age or hormonal changes. Others may experience it following illness, periods of stress or certain medical conditions.

Whatever the reason, the emotional impact can be significant.

Hair is such a personal part of our appearance. When it begins to change, it can affect how we style it, how comfortable we feel in photographs and even how confident we feel going out without spending extra time trying to disguise thinner areas.

This is something we believe deserves much more attention.

What Is Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)?

Scalp micropigmentation is a specialist cosmetic pigmentation treatment that uses tiny deposits of pigment to create the appearance of natural hair follicles on the scalp.

The treatment doesn't grow new hair or stop existing hair from falling out. Instead, it creates a visual effect that can make the scalp look less noticeable or give the appearance of greater hair density.

For men who wear their hair very short or shaved, SMP can recreate the look of closely shaved hair follicles.

For women and men who still have their own hair but are experiencing thinning, the approach is different.

We work within the existing hair to reduce the contrast between the scalp and surrounding hair, helping the area appear fuller and more even.

Scalp Micropigmentation for Women: Do You Need to Shave Your Hair?

No — and this is probably one of the biggest misconceptions about female scalp micropigmentation.

Women with thinning hair can often have SMP without shaving their existing hair.

For example, imagine a woman who has noticed her parting becoming wider over the years. Her hair may still be relatively long and healthy, but the scalp is much more visible than it used to be.

By carefully placing pigment within the thinning area, we can create the illusion of additional density and make the visible scalp less prominent.

The same principle can be applied to suitable areas around the crown or other regions where the hair has become thinner.

The aim isn't to create an artificial-looking scalp. It's to achieve a subtle, natural-looking improvement that blends with the existing hair.

Can SMP Really Make a Difference to Someone's Confidence?

I believe this is one of the most important reasons people consider scalp micropigmentation.

Hair loss isn't always something other people notice, but the person experiencing it may think about it every single day.

They might avoid certain hairstyles, feel uncomfortable when bright lighting makes their scalp more visible or constantly check how their hair looks from different angles.

Some people use coloured hair fibres, powders or scalp-concealing products to disguise the areas that bother them.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with using those products, but having to apply them repeatedly can become frustrating.

SMP offers a longer-lasting cosmetic solution that doesn't need to be applied every morning.

For the right client, feeling more comfortable wearing their hair naturally, going swimming or simply not worrying so much about their scalp showing can be a meaningful improvement in everyday confidence.

Of course, no cosmetic treatment can guarantee how somebody will feel afterwards. But helping someone feel more comfortable with their appearance is one of the most rewarding parts of working in this industry.

What Are the Benefits of Scalp Micropigmentation?

One of the biggest advantages of SMP is that it can be adapted to different types of hair loss and different aesthetic goals.

For clients with thinning hair, SMP can help reduce the appearance of visible scalp and create the illusion of fuller-looking hair.

For men who prefer a shaved hairstyle, it can create the appearance of a defined hairline and closely shaved follicles.

It may also be used to camouflage suitable scars on the scalp, including some hair-transplant scars, although scar tissue requires careful assessment because it can respond differently to pigmentation.

Another benefit is that SMP doesn't involve hair transplantation or surgical incisions. It is still a procedure that penetrates the skin and requires appropriate hygiene, aftercare and healing, but it doesn't involve transplanting hair follicles.

The results are long-lasting, although the pigment can gradually fade and maintenance treatments may be required.

Is Scalp Micropigmentation the Same as a Hair Tattoo?

Although SMP is sometimes described as a hair tattoo, the techniques and intended appearance are different from conventional decorative tattooing.

Scalp micropigmentation uses carefully selected pigment colours, specialised equipment and tiny impressions designed to resemble the appearance of hair follicles.

The size, spacing, colour and placement of these impressions are particularly important.

A natural result should complement the client's skin tone, hair colour, existing hair density and overall appearance.

This is why I believe the consultation and treatment planning are just as important as the procedure itself.

What About Female Hair Loss Caused by Hormones or Medical Conditions?

This is another important point.

SMP can help improve the appearance of thinning hair, but it doesn't treat the underlying cause of hair loss.

If you're experiencing sudden, unexplained or rapidly progressing hair loss, it's important to speak to your GP or an appropriate hair-loss specialist before considering cosmetic camouflage.

Certain types of hair loss may benefit from medical treatment, and some scalp conditions or active forms of alopecia may make SMP unsuitable until the condition has been assessed or stabilised.

We would never want someone to overlook a treatable medical concern simply because they're looking for a cosmetic solution.

For us, responsible treatment means knowing when SMP may help and when further medical advice should come first.

How Many SMP Sessions Will I Need?

Scalp micropigmentation is normally built up gradually over multiple appointments.

Rather than trying to create the full result in one session, pigment impressions are layered carefully to develop a natural-looking appearance.

The number of sessions depends on the size of the treatment area, existing hair density, skin characteristics and the result you're hoping to achieve.

Some clients need a relatively small area treated, while others require a more extensive approach.

During your consultation, we'll explain what can realistically be achieved and recommend a treatment plan based on your individual needs.
