Relaxing massage treatment at Erika’s Beauty in Derby, helping clients unwind and ease everyday muscle tension

When we ask clients why they've booked a massage, the answers are often very similar. Tight shoulders, an aching back, feeling stressed or simply wanting an hour where nobody needs anything from them.

And sometimes, that's exactly what we need.

At Erika's Beauty in Derby, we believe massage shouldn't be something you only consider when you're already feeling uncomfortable or completely exhausted. Taking time to look after yourself can be just as important as looking after your skin, hair or physical fitness.

But not all massages are the same, and choosing the right one can make a real difference to your experience.

Why Do Our Shoulders and Back Feel So Tight?

Think about how much time we spend sitting at desks, looking down at our phones, driving or simply rushing from one thing to another.

Our neck and shoulder muscles can spend hours in the same positions. Add stress into the equation, and it's not unusual to notice yourself holding tension without even realising it.

You might find yourself raising your shoulders, clenching your jaw or feeling particularly stiff at the end of a busy day.

Massage can help ease that feeling of muscular tightness, encourage relaxation and temporarily improve comfort and movement.

However, it's important to understand that massage isn't a cure for every type of back or neck pain. Persistent, worsening or unexplained pain should always be assessed by an appropriate healthcare professional.

Relaxing Massage or Firmer Pressure: Which Should You Choose?

One thing we often find is that clients assume a massage needs to be painful to be effective.

It doesn't.

Some people love firmer pressure, particularly when their muscles feel tight. Others find that gentler, flowing movements help them relax far more effectively.

The best massage isn't necessarily the strongest one. It's the one that's appropriate for your body and what you're hoping to achieve.

If your main goal is to switch off and unwind, a relaxing massage may be exactly what you need.

If you're experiencing muscular tightness, you may prefer more focused work on particular areas, provided that approach is suitable for you.

Always tell your therapist how the pressure feels. You shouldn't feel that you need to tolerate significant pain to get a benefit from your treatment.

Can Regular Massage Help With Stress?

We all experience stress differently.

Some people notice it in their sleep, others in their mood, and many of us feel it physically through tension in our shoulders, neck or back.

Massage provides an opportunity to step away from everyday distractions and allow your body to relax.

Research suggests massage may help reduce feelings of stress and anxiety in some people, although the benefits vary and it shouldn't replace appropriate medical or psychological care when needed.

Even something as simple as putting your phone away, lying comfortably in a quiet treatment room and having an uninterrupted hour can make a difference to how you feel.

And you don't have to wait until you're overwhelmed to give yourself that time.

How Often Should You Have a Massage?

This is something clients often ask us, and there isn't one answer that suits everybody.

If you simply enjoy massage as part of your self-care routine, you might choose to book once a month.

If you regularly experience muscular tightness, you may prefer more frequent appointments, depending on your needs and your therapist's recommendations.

Others enjoy a massage occasionally, particularly during stressful periods or after a demanding few weeks.

Consistency can be helpful, but there's no need to book treatments more frequently than your body, budget or lifestyle requires.

We would always rather recommend something appropriate for you than encourage appointments you don't actually need.

What Should You Tell Your Massage Therapist Before Treatment?

A good massage should begin with a conversation, even if you've had plenty of massages before.

Let your therapist know if you have any areas of discomfort, injuries, recent surgery, relevant medical conditions or changes in your health.

You should also mention if you're pregnant, taking medication that affects bruising or bleeding, or experiencing symptoms that haven't been medically assessed.

Some conditions may mean your massage needs to be adapted, postponed or avoided until you've received medical advice.

And don't forget the simple things. If you're cold, uncomfortable or would prefer lighter pressure, please say so. Your comfort matters throughout the treatment.

Massage at Erika's Beauty in Derby

For us, a massage isn't about rushing through a routine. It's about understanding what each client needs and creating an experience where they feel comfortable, listened to and properly cared for.

Some clients arrive wanting to ease everyday muscular tension. Others simply want a peaceful hour away from work, family responsibilities and busy schedules.

Both are equally good reasons to book.

Our therapists will discuss your preferences and help you choose an appropriate massage treatment, so you can enjoy your appointment with confidence.
