Hair Extensions in Derby: Which Method Is Right for You?

Before and after professional hair extensions showing added length and volume at Erika's Beauty Derby.

Hair extensions have come a long way over the years. They're no longer just for people who want really long hair. In fact, quite a few of our clients at Erika's Beauty have extensions simply to add a bit of thickness, especially around the sides where their natural hair might be finer.

One question we get asked quite often is which type of hair extensions is best. And the answer isn't always straightforward, because what works beautifully for one person might not be the right choice for somebody else.

We offer several hair extension methods at our salon in Derby, including tape-ins, nano rings, keratin bonds and wefts. Each has its own advantages, and there are a few things worth knowing before deciding which one to go for.

Tape-In Hair Extensions – A Popular Choice for Length and Volume

Tape-in hair extensions are one of the methods we offer for clients looking to add length or thickness. They consist of small sections of extension hair attached using thin adhesive tapes, which sit relatively flat against the head.

When fitted correctly, they can blend beautifully with natural hair and feel quite lightweight.

They're also a popular option because the hair can often be reused during maintenance appointments, provided it's still in good condition.

However, tape-ins do need looking after properly. Certain products, particularly oils and conditioners applied too close to the attachments, can affect the adhesive.

And although tape-ins can be suitable for some clients with finer hair, that doesn't automatically mean they're the best option for everyone.

Nano Ring Hair Extensions – Small, Discreet Attachments

Nano rings are another method we offer at Erika's Beauty. These are individual strands of extension hair attached using very small metal rings.

One of the benefits is that no heat or adhesive is needed during fitting.

Because the attachments are small, they can be quite discreet, and the individual strands give us flexibility when deciding where additional length or volume is needed.

However, something I always think is worth mentioning is that smaller attachments don't necessarily mean less stress on the natural hair.

If someone's hair is particularly fine, fragile or already experiencing breakage, we need to be careful about how much additional weight it can support.

This is one of the reasons why we recommend having a consultation rather than choosing a method based purely on how it looks online.

Keratin Bond Hair Extensions – Natural Movement and Flexible Styling

Keratin bonds are fitted strand by strand, using a specialist heated tool to soften the bonding material and secure the extensions to small sections of natural hair.

They can give a lovely natural finish, particularly when the bonds are carefully placed and matched to the client's hair.

Some clients prefer this method because the individual strands allow plenty of movement and styling flexibility.

But like any other extension method, they need proper maintenance and professional removal.

Trying to remove bonds yourself, or leaving them in for longer than recommended, can cause unnecessary damage to your own hair.

Weft Hair Extensions – For Fuller, Thicker-Looking Hair

Weft extensions are a popular choice for clients wanting to create noticeable volume and length.

Instead of attaching lots of individual strands, the extension hair is fitted in rows using a suitable weft technique.

They can create a beautiful, full finish, especially for clients who love bouncy blow-dries, curls or longer hairstyles.

However, wefts aren't necessarily suitable for every hair type. We always need to consider the density and condition of the natural hair, as well as how much extension hair we're adding.

The aim is to achieve the look you want without putting unnecessary tension on your own hair.

Which Hair Extensions Are Best for Fine Hair?

This is probably one of the questions I'd most like clients to understand before booking extensions.

Just because a particular method is advertised as suitable for fine hair doesn't mean it's going to be suitable for everybody with fine hair.

There's a difference between naturally fine hair that's healthy and strong, and hair that's fine because of breakage, thinning or previous damage.

We also need to consider how much hair you actually want to add.

Sometimes a small amount of carefully placed extension hair can make a huge difference to the overall appearance without needing a full head.

And sometimes, if the natural hair isn't in the best condition, my advice would be to concentrate on improving its health before considering extensions.

I'd much rather be honest with a client than recommend something that could potentially make their hair worse.

Do Hair Extensions Damage Your Natural Hair?

This is another question we're asked regularly.

The truth is that any hair extension method can cause damage if it's fitted incorrectly, too heavy for the natural hair or not maintained properly.

Extensions that pull continuously on the roots can contribute to breakage and even traction-related hair loss.

That's why the fitting itself is only part of the process.

Choosing the right amount of hair, positioning the attachments correctly, following aftercare advice and attending maintenance appointments are all equally important.

I always say that having beautiful extensions shouldn't come at the expense of your own hair.

How Often Do Hair Extensions Need Maintenance?

This depends on the method you've chosen and how quickly your natural hair grows.

Some extensions need to be moved up or refitted regularly, while others have a different removal and replacement process.

It's important not to leave them in longer than recommended, even if they still look fine from the outside.

As your natural hair grows, the attachments move further away from the scalp, which can increase tangling and make the extensions harder to manage.

During your consultation, we'll explain what maintenance is involved and what you should expect before committing to a particular method.

Looking After Your Hair Extensions at Home

Good aftercare really does make a difference to how your extensions look and how long they remain in good condition.

We recommend using a suitable extension brush, being gentle around the attachments and avoiding pulling when brushing.

It's also important to use the correct haircare products, as not everything that's suitable for natural hair is suitable for extensions.

Heat styling should be kept under control, and we'd always advise making sure your hair and attachments are completely dry before going to bed.

And please don't skip your maintenance appointments!

We provide aftercare advice based on the extension method you've chosen, so you'll know exactly how to look after your new hair at home.

Thinking About Hair Extensions for Christmas?

Christmas is always a lovely time for a hair transformation.

Whether you're planning a Christmas party, a special event or simply fancy having longer, fuller hair for the festive season, extensions can make a real difference to how you style your hair.

They're particularly popular for creating fuller curls, bouncy blow-dries and beautiful occasion hairstyles.

But I'd always recommend planning ahead rather than leaving everything until the last minute.

We need time to discuss your desired result, assess your hair, match the colour and arrange the fitting.

And if you've never worn extensions before, it's nice to have a little time to get used to them before a big event.

Why We Recommend a Hair Extensions Consultation at Erika's Beauty

When you come to us for a hair extensions consultation, we're not just looking at how long you'd like your hair to be.

We want to know what your natural hair is like, how you normally style it, whether you've had extensions before and how much maintenance you're comfortable with.

We'll talk through the different methods and explain what we feel would work best for you.

Sometimes the method a client originally wanted isn't necessarily the one we'd recommend, and that's absolutely fine.

Our job is to give you professional advice so you can make an informed decision.

For me, the most important thing is that your extensions look beautiful, feel comfortable and that we look after your natural hair at the same time.
